First Open Forum of Members of the People's Party of Spain

The People's Party of Spain in the United States attended the First Open Forum of Members of the People's Party held in Madrid on January 24-25, 2009. The US delegation was integrated by Geraldine Beneítez, territorial delegate in Washington DC.

The event started with a ?virtual get-together on Facebook? where participants where encouraged to incorporate new technologies into their lives. Keynote addresses were given by Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, mayor of Madrid, Antonio Basagoiti, candidate for president of the Basque Country region, Esperanza Aguirre, president of Madrid, and María Dolores de Cospedal, secretary general of the People's Party of Spain.

The forum included the following areas of discussion:
  • "We Know" (economy), by Cristóbal Montoro
  • "We Support" (foreign policies), by Ramón L. Valcárcel
  • "We Are" (Spain), by Pío García Escudero
  • "We Feel" (social policies), by Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría
  • "We Think" (values and principles), by Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Antonio Basagoiti
  • "We Commit" (environment and technology), by Esteban González Pons
The representatives of the People's Party of Spain overseas participated in the drafting and presentation of proposals to help Spaniards living outside of Spain. A Council of Spaniards Residing Overseas was created.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, candidate for president of Galicia, Jaime Mayor Oreja, candidate for member of the European Parliament, María Dolores de Cospedal, and Mariano Rajoy, National President of the People's Party of Spain, spoke during the closing session. The event defined the objectives and principles of our party, positioned it as the only alternative to the current Socialist government, and transmited a message of hope to the Spanish society.
